Flat Out ****Click to teach Gmail that this conversation is important.Aline Waites <waitesaline@gmail.com> 12:09 (0 minutes ago)to reviews@remotegoat, bcc: Elsie, bcc: jodytoo, bcc: nigel, bcc: Susan, bcc: Biddie FLAT OUT By Jennifer SelwayUpstairs at the Gatehouse
According to the programme, the author thought that farce would be difficult because people are no longer outraged by sexual misconduct, by shame at their indiscretions. However here it comes in this utterly delightful old fashioned style which works perfectly in a modern environment.
The Carmichaels, Claire and Hugh are illegally renting a large top floor flat in South Kensington in which they are illegally subletting to Sandrine a student whose boyfriend Tim Forrester, -played by Jake Mitchell, is working for estate agents who are snooping on flat owners and subletters in order to prosecute and get them evicted. This is to avoid the large compensation the owners will have to pay in order to get rid of them The tenants already have things to complain about – like the presence of mice and dodgy electrics.
In the lower apartment, there is Phil Gibson (Tom Pepper) who had taken on the flat with his girlfriend, Trudy using her name on the contract. Unfortunately, she has been eaten by an alligator in Miami and Phil has no claim on the flat. He has to make sure nobody knows that Trudy has met her end and has to find somebody to impersonate her so that he can claim the compensation.
Claire (Cathy Walker)has allowed her friend Angela, played by the very beautiful Jennifer Matter, to visit the apartment in a raincoat and black underwear in order to have time with her lover Richard Earl (Giles Fletcher). Angela does not tell Richard that she is a widow, as she thinks that is not very exciting, so she is pretending she is still married to Simon, who died several years ago. She believes this adds excitement to the affair. Unfortunately, she has not realised that there is scaffolding up and the builders can witness anything that goes on in the flat through the large back window. Not only this, but most of the cast members tend to be forgetful and leave things in the flat that they must retrieve. Not to mention the presence of the new tenant Sandrine played by Grace McInerny and her evil boyfriend Tom Forrester. So the affair finds it difficult to progress. True to form there are changes of attire, identities, misunderstandings and a rather special comedy performance by Stuart Simons as Hugh Carmichael.
All of them have secrets that they cannot afford to disclose but one person knows them all.  Marina the Cleaner (probably an illegal immigrant) played by the totally enchanting Hollie Taylor.
There are so many twists and turns in the plot but luckily the terrific actors involved work with an enormous amount of clarity and energy in their performances and it is not too complicated to understand – eventually.
The set by Emily Bestow resembles a typical South Kensington flat with a plethora of exits and entrances, doors to the front entrance, bedroom, kitchen etc plus of course the huge window at the back, awfully handy for escapes and hideaways as well as an embarrassment as the builders peer in.
There is the usual immaculate direction by John Plews. Perfectly cast, highly professional actors and creatives and great fun. Production by Katie Plews.
Selway has done a great job in reproducing the old favourite and wonderful style of theatre and turning it into a scenario that we can accept today.
